What does a nebulizer do?
A nebuliser is a machine that helps you to breathe in medicine as a fine mist through a mask or a mouthpiece.
Why have I been told to use a nebulizer?
You may have been told to use a nebulizer to inhale medication to clear your airways or to treat infections: in an emergency, if you are struggling to breathe and need a high dose of your reliever medicine - paramedics or hospital staff may give you reliever medicine through a nebulizer.
What conditions require a nebulizer?
Doctors typically prescribe nebulizers to people with one of the following lung disorders:
asthma.
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
cystic fibrosis.
bronchiectasis.
Does a nebulizer break up mucus?
The medications used in nebulizers help your child by loosening the mucus in the lungs so it can be coughed out more easily, and by relaxing the airway muscles so that more air can move in and out of the lungs. Breathing the medication straight into the lungs works better and faster than taking the medication by mouth.
